New Regulations Concerning Driver’s Health And Sleep Apnea

Drivers need to be prepared for the new regulations that are designed to enhance efforts to minimize cases of obstructive sleep apnea and other health issues for the trucking industry.

Regulators have already released preliminary information basically putting the industry on notice that they want the drivers to get in shape and get healthy.

Due to the nature of the industry, it is very difficult for drivers to do the things that need to be done to stay in shape. In fact, the majority of truckers are not in top physical shape. A sedenatry job, obesity, irregular sleep and eating schedules are just a few of the issues that make them prone to health problems, including sleep apnea. Because sleep apnea causes fatigue, it can lead to road accidents for the drivers.

Until now, the government has never mandated a test for OSA, however, based on the information coming out of Washington and CSA 2010, it looks like OSA will now be addressed in the CDL medical exam in the respiratory section.

While some may view this as being unnecessary and intrusive, it should be viewed as an opportunity to help improve your health. Individuals with sleep apnea are much more prone to having heart attacks, strokes and diabetes. Not only will the treatment for OSA help you become a safer driver, it will improve your overall health.
