The Cost of Treating and Preventing Diabetes

The cost associated with treating diabetes and lost productivity due to the disease are estimated to exceed $174 billion a year according to the Wall Street Journal. This has prompted efforts to help prevent the 60 million Americans that are considered at risk from becoming diabetic. Prevention programs include smoking cessation programs, exercise, nutrition and the use of medication. These prevention programs come with a price tag too. The recently enacted health care legislation included close to $50 billion to help support prevention programs.
