How To Treat a Cold Naturally

The next time you come down with a cold, don’t count on Echinacea pills to speed your recovery.  The herb is one of the most popular supplements sold, due to its reputation for fighting the common cold.  However, a study involving 719 adults, conducted by the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health, found that the herb had little impact on the severity or length of a cold.

What does work?  According to the Mayo Clinic, the following ways to lessen a cold’s misery are backed by science:

  • Drink plenty of water and other beverages to loosen congestion.
  • Gargle with warm salt water to relieve a sore, scratchy throat.
  • Use saline nasal drops and sprays to fight a stuffy nose.
  • Have some chicken soup.  It has anti-inflammatory properties and relieves congestion.
