Problems Regarding Obesity in Health Care

Often it is challenging for the obese to find suitable health insurance coverage due to their condition. Most firms reject obese patients, grouping them as ‘money vacuums’. People suffering from obesity do have higher costs for medicine, operations, hospital bills, etc. However, these patients have a high price to pay for themselves as well.

Patients with obesity generally suffer in the workplace due to limited mobility, leading to lower wages as well as a lessened repertoire. They suffer from numerous health issues, including but not limited to:

  • Diabetes
  • Gallbladder disease
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Heart disease

People suffering from obesity may not be sapping nearly as much money as rumored though. Life expectancy in obesity is lowered by 1.65 years on average, translating to a shorter lifespan than similar patients at healthy weight and fewer years/months of health care to be provided. Given there are still various medical costs to be covered, the obese still have to pay the price physically as well as financially.
